According to Frank, his father was involved with the Mafia. “[Alfonse Frank] Funzi Tieri, a big-time gangster with the Genovese family, came to my brother David’s bar mitzvah, when I was twenty-three,” he said. The player has never played football before, and had dropped out of school but was getting back on track and was encouraged by the administration to join the team. There was no intent here to cheat or violate the rules. This player saw the field at the end of 2 games in which he had no impact on the outcome. This was a simple paperwork error that resulted in the MIAA making a rash and unjust decision without allowing Mansfield due process. The MIAA immediately ruled that MHS forfeit the 2 games in which the player got off the bench, and then forfeit their league championship, and then forfeit the playoff berth, and so on. The punishment here to these 85 football players on this team simply does not fit the crime which is an administrative error - a piece of paper was not filed - which would have been granted - and this wouldn’t have been an issue. It’s a minor procedural error and the MIAA has turned this into the circus of the century in HS sports. They should be ASHAMED. The MIAA needs to inject some COMMON SENSE into their mission. The waiver WOULD have been granted - this was not intentional and the player did not have an effect on the outcome of either game. There was no intent to avoid procedure or cheat. The penalty should be a fine or a warning to the ADMINISTRATORS, not ripping a lifetime of memories away from these kids who have worked so hard and achieved so much. GO HORNETS!
