I was appalled today at an ad on the side of a CTA bus: “Strippers will not tolerate disrespect…HAHA, just kidding!” The ad is for the new Tucker Max movie, a film that glorifies the mistreatment and sexual exploitation of women.

I am outraged that this foul message is being endorsed and publicized by my city. It is not funny—it is abusive, and it must be removed from the buses. CTA authorities should be ashamed.

I would think that the City of Chicago would put more consideration into the image of the city, and would have greater respect for its citizens.

We as citizens also need to be more responsible with what we allow to be deemed as funny. Jokes that come at the cost of dignity for women or working people are not funny, and humor is a thin veneer for the violence that lies within those jokes. Furthermore, using humor to deal with the pernicious issue of mistreatment of women allows it to continue; people who raise concerns are told they are too serious and need to lighten up; and exploitation is seen as a lighthearted and knee-slapping affair, something to revel in.

The fact that the City is actively promoting such an attitude with a bus-sized ad, is tacitly perpetuating systems of female oppression and objectification—it makes me sick.

I cannot express how livid I am about this abhorrent ad.

On the back page of today’s Redeye there is something about “flash mobs” to promote the new season of “So You Think You Can Dance”. The blurb (which I could not find on their website) indicated that people would be dressed in business attire and then strip down and start dancing. They list a location as Daley Plaza which is convenient for me as my office overlooks it. However, this morning around 10:30 there was a group of about 20 people in green, red and blue t-shirts who busted some moves for about five minutes, but it certainly wasn’t “flash mob” style and they weren’t particularly good. However, the redeye has a list of all the places they are going to be doing it and they will be going til 3pm, so perhaps you guys could investigate a little.

“Some suburban school districts are allowing parents to excuse their children from watching a back-to-school webcast by President Barack Obama next week.”

This is absurd. I don’t care what party he belongs to, he is our president and it isn’t going to harm your child to watch him speak. If anything, it teaches them to be disrespectful of people with different views. I find this situation very disturbing.
