Supposedly this move will only save five million dollars, which falls way short of the 75 million dollar budget gap. Also, that five million will pale in comparison to the city’s loss of bar/entertainment revenue and the cost of the sky rocketing rate of drunk driving incidents. The city government really should step in.

Does Metro need so many escalators? Sure DuPont and Royslen do, but the platforms at Foggy Bottom and several other stations aren’t that deep under ground. Currently Foggy Bottom is a train wreck every morning because Metro closed 1 of 3 escalators for a YEAR to repair! Why it takes a YEAR to fix one escalator is beyond me, and it got me thinking with all the budget problems Metro is having maybe we’d all be better off if Metro just installed stairs instead of escalators where it could. Lord knows most of us could use a little more exercise and this would save the system money in energy cost and repairs.

The enrollment caps in place for DC colleges are unfair and probably illegal - the schools should formally challenge the caps. The size and growth of colleges and universities in DC is already regulated by zoning standards - just like other land uses. To treat colleges and universities differently and to dictate how many students they can have on a campus is like dictating how many employees a company or office building can have in the business district. It isn’t needed since these issues are already controlled by zoning. The enrollment caps unfairly limit the activity of DC colleges and hurt these institutions by limiting growth and viability.

Great Email from MARC—only in DC

February 28, 2011 2:07 p.m.

Attention, MARC Train and MTA Commuter Bus Passengers—

We have received numerous inquiries about what, if any, modifications the MTA will make to MARC Train and Commuter Bus service in the event of a federal government shutdown.

If the government does shut down on March 4, all MARC Train and Commuter Bus service will operate as scheduled. In the event of a prolonged shutdown, MTA management will review ridership levels and may consider operating reduced service.

Please also note that in the event of a government shutdown, regular monthly and weekly ticket refund policies will be in effect:

—One-way tickets are non-refundable.
—Weekly tickets are refundable if returned no later than 11:59pm the Friday prior to the effective week.
—Monthly tickets are refundable, based on calendar days, as follows: Prior to effective month - 100%, Days 1 thru 5 - 75%, Days 6 thru 10 - 50%, after Day 11 – no refund.

Thank you for riding MARC Train and Commuter Bus

The measure would allow any person with a valid state-issued concealed carry permit to carry a concealed firearm in any state that issues concealed firearm permits, or that does not prohibit the carrying of concealed firearms.
RE: NextBus text messages.

I got a bunch of these texts yesterday too. Mine seem to be for stops in the Seattle Streetcar System. According to the website www.nextbus.com, there is an entity that provides real-time arrivals for many different transit agencies.

Somebody in Quebec is probably right now getting a text saying that that the L2 north to Chevy Chase Circle will arrive at the Connecticut Ave + Zoo Park Entrance in 15 minutes…

Network members,

You may have already read or heard that TBD announced some pending staff reductions to the staff today. I am hopeful that the members of the community engagement team will have jobs once the reassignments are finished, but we won’t know for a while who will remain in new assignments and who will lose their jobs. I will remain in charge of community engagement.

We will continue to aggregate content from the TBD Community Network and you remain an important part of our plans. I cannot tell you exactly what those plans will be, though, because we are still making them. As I’ve probably said too often, lots of things here are TBD.

If you have questions, I will be glad to address them or to tell you that we’re still working on the answers. I just wanted to tell you right away that the network remains important to us. For the next few weeks, please keep letting your community hosts know about any questions or concerns you have. I’ll be in touch when the changes announced today take place, and then I will become your primary contact person.

Thanks for all you have contributed to TBD.

All the best,
Steve

Four people BASE jumped off the roof of my condo in Northern Virginia at about 9:45 last night. I won’t disclose the exact location, but it was quick, silent, and they got away clean despite the fact that two of them got stuck on a rooftop and had to climb down 4 stories to the ground using the balconies and drainpipes. This might be the coolest thing to go down in DC since dude was elected in ‘08.
