Former employees of the now defunct Private Security contractor for DC Public Schools and DC Government buildings, Hawk One Security, have yet to be PAID their wages dating back to late August 2009. It is now going on over two months and these employees have not been paid money they rightfully earned. The Department of Labor claims the money is available but has yet to release it. In addition, the August and September invoices have been approved by MPD (DC Gov’t). The Mayor’s office has the authority to order that the monies be paid to the workers.

This is ridiculous and is just not right. You have families out here starving with rent and bills to pay.

WHAT is really going on here????????? Please look in to this story.

It appears Mangialardo’s at 13th and Pennsylvania SE had their front window broken last night. As arguable the top notch italian sub in town, and a true family owned business. I’d encourage DCists to give them some extra business and maybe leave an extra dollar to hlep cover the cost of a new windo.

For all of those street parkers out there:
A Message from DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr. on the Suspension of Street Sweeping, as of Friday, November 6:
“I made the decision at 12 noon on Friday (November 6th) after watching a street sweeper on its route. There was a trail of leaves behind the sweeper. I then went to the shop to see if the mechanics could modify any part of the sweeping mechanism so that we could continue the program through November 20th. Unfortunately they could not. The manufacturer changed the design of the sweeper on the newer models.
“It just didn’t seem to make any sense to continue the sweeping program when we were not doing an effective job. A lot of folks move their vehicles for the program. It seemed to be the right thing to do to give them some relief even if I didn’t give them a lot of notice.
“I apologize to anyone who received a street sweeping ticket because they should not have. I will administratively void any ticket that is issued this week for a street sweeping violation. It is not necessary that you send me your ticket number for the street sweeping violation. I can look it up and void it.”

for overheard:

Welcome to our nation’s capital…where locals generally have pretty extensive vocabularies

A few weeks ago a man from out-of-town brings his bike into a shop and engages the technician about the local scene and food offerings. Despite the fact that this a neighborhood shop full of customers, he complains loudly that there are too many lawyers and he’s not very impressed with the city:

Out-of-towner: “So where’s a good spot to get some food around here?”
Bike tech: “You can actually get pretty good food from some of the food carts around town.”
Out-of-towner: “Are they clean? I mean…can’t you get dysentery from food carts?”
Bike tech: “Dysentery? I’ve never heard of such a thing.”
Out-of-towner: “It’s bloody diarrhea.”

any plans for coverage of the epic fail by ESPN at the bill simmons midnight madness book signing last night? They ended up a hundred plus books short and closed the doors at 2.15am with the block between 11th and 12th in front of the ESPN zone full of people waiting to get in (despite promises on his blog that simmons would stay as long as people were there). For an event that was hyped by ESPN as a special Monday Night Football/Meet Bill Book Tour, it just ended up being a chance to watch the Redskin’s continue to be terrible, then stand in the rain and think about it before being sent home empty handed.
