Re: The MTA is offering no refund for unused monthly metrocards purchased pre fare hike.

During the last hike, I got my TransitChex Metrocards refunded through the normal Metrocard return channel. Send them back in the MTA refund envelopes the station agents have. Give them a follow-up call 3-4 weeks later to make sure the refund gets processed.

The MTA is offering no refund for unused monthly metrocards ...

The MTA is offering no refund for unused monthly metrocards purchased pre fare hike.
I receive monthly metrocards automatically each month through a program called WageWorks. Due to vacations and other circumstances, I’ve got a slight backlog of unused cards (2 completely unused, one I just started two weeks ago). This morning, when I went to swipe through to the subway, I got a “see agent” message. The nice woman in the booth at Grand Army Plaza told me to call the number on the back of my card. I call this number and speak with a woman named Miss Stevens. I politely ask her what action I am supposed to take to get reimbursed for my unused monthly cards (approximately $250 in value). She tells to ask WageWorks what to do with them. I ask if the MTA is offering refunds or the chance to add money to the cards to make them valid. Miss Stevens starts screaming at me that she has already answered my question. I ask her to please stop being so rude, she is customer service and I’m asking perfectly reasonable questions. She continues to scream at me and without my speaking a word in response she hangs up on me. Previously only slightly irritated, I now full-on hate the MTA. I call WageWorks, where a very nice woman tells me that my metrocards are now worthless. I will have to eat the full value of these cards which say they expire in 2012 and there is nothing they or I can do about it. The MTA will not provide me with a refund or a voucher or anything. Considering there were three other people in line with me at the booth having the same issue and mentioning other cards they held I can only imagine this will affect quite a few commuters.
