Just added this pic I took Sept. 13, the Saturday after Ike hit. Two friends and I were driving around town looking at damage, and while we were on 59, we saw a huge plume of smoke in the distance. We happened to be getting off at S. Shepherd, which is where this was - the poor Magic Island restaurant had caught on fire. Don’t know how it’s doing now, but I managed to snap a few pictures of it as we drove past. I got the googly eye from the rescue crew for rubbernecking.

Taft Street Coffee and Ecclesia are providing a host of services for any and all persons affected by Ike. Starting Tuesday, September 23rd, during normal operating hours, people who have been displaced by Ike and its effects are able to come into the shop for a free meal and some free coffee, a place to charge cell phones and check e-mail, and the chance to soak up a little well-needed air conditioning

http://sheeats.wordpress.com/2008/09/21/catalina-coffee-doesnt-care-about-its-customers/#comment-1402

Catalina’s snubbing of its customers is even more appalling in the face of all this generosity and the continued lack of power that most of its patrons are dealing with at home. I’ll allow Sean Stoner to explain in his own words, as he did in a blog post yesterday (emphasis is mine):

If so this is beyond disgusting.

I recently was told that Ed Emmett our County Judge does not live in Harris County nor has he paid any property taxes in the past three years. In addition I was told he listed the 1300 block of Wirt as his residence when he filed to run for office again. I drove by this address today and found a private park, School of The Woods and a strip shopping center. His name is on a newly purchased or leased building for the county in the 1400 block of Wirt. Perhaps this is another of his moves to stay in a position that has provided significant financial gains for him and his family who get a number of county contracts. If he doesn’t live in the county how can he run for office?
